How to pack a suitcase with less fuss and more room

A well-packed suitcase closes easily and lets you find what you need on arrival. The answer is less a miracle technique than a simple routine: choose what earns its place, keep related items together and leave essentials within reach.

Start before you open the case

Lay out everything you are thinking of taking. Build a few outfits that share shoes and pieces you can mix easily. Then remove the things you have added only ‘just in case’. You will quickly see what takes up space without serving the trip.

Roll or fold? Let the garment decide

Rolling soft clothes can fill small gaps and help you spot each item. Shirts, jackets and fabrics that crease easily are often better folded carefully. There is little point in squeezing everything so tightly that it arrives crumpled.

Group items by use

Packing cubes can separate tops, underwear and sportswear. Consider one cube for your first night, so you do not need to unpack the whole case on arrival. A compression cube may reduce the space taken up by soft textiles, depending on how you fill it.

Save vacuum bags for bulky items

A thick jumper or coat can occupy half a suitcase. A vacuum bag may reduce its volume, but it will not reduce its weight. Check the allowance on your ticket and think about how you will repack everything for the return journey.

Balance the weight

Put heavy items near the wheels so the case is easier to pull. Cushion fragile objects in the middle with soft clothing. Keep medicines, travel documents, chargers and valuables in luggage that stays with you, in line with your carrier’s rules.

Check before closing

  1. Liquids and devices you may need at security are easy to reach.
  2. The case closes without excessive pressure on its shell or fastening.
  3. Its weight and dimensions match your ticket.
  4. You have left a little room for the way home.

A few minutes of organisation at the start make each stage of the trip easier. When you arrive, you know where everything is.
